As Benjamin Franklin was walking out of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 – the convention which birthed the U.S. Constitution – a woman approached him and asked “Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” Benjamin Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

This is the first of many posts that will try to explain why I think it’s important to remember the meaning of that quote and how the majority of citizens today are failing to “keep it.”
